Children & Salvation
FirstPrevious  NextLast

But JESUS called them unto him and said, Suffer little children to come unto me, and forbid them not; for of such is the kingdom of God. Luke18:16

The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; and he that winneth souls is wise. Proverbs 11:30

Go ye therefore, and teach all nations.....Matthew 28:19

When are they ready? How do you know they're ready?

In our experience ages 7 through 10 are prime candidates for understanding and accepting Jesus as Lord and Saviour. Some children understand younger and some older. This is a very individual decision and is based entirely on exposure to the scripture and the leading of the Holy Spirit in their hearts. In the end, it is still a personal choice between child and the Lord.

Our own son who had been in church from birth accepted Jesus at age 4. He had heard us give the plan of salvation to boys and girls from the beginning of his life. Therefore, when one evening as he knelt for bedtime prayer, he began by asking Jesus to forgive him of his sins and to take him to heaven when he dies. He went on to clearly articulate his need of the Savior. When finishing his prayer, he looked up at his Dad and said, "Did I do that right?" He is an adult now, and will tell you this is his testimony and this is the moment when he was born again.

Our daughter made a profession of faith at age 5 when the well-meaning kindergarten Christian School teacher asked who had not prayed the prayer to be saved yet. Of course, since she had not, she thought she'd better get this done. She prayed the words presented to her and then assumed that through the process of doing the work of the prayer, saying the right thing, that she was saved. She was eventually saved [ born-again] at age 14 when she understood via the conviction of the Holy Spirit that it is by grace we are saved, not of ourselves. She accepted Christ as Savior then.

How do you get them ready?

Pray over your children. Jesus prayed in John 17:9 "I pray for them..."

Make sure that the salvation message is before your class every week in some form either by flash cards, PowerPoint, or some visible means.

The Holy Spirit does the work. "No man can come unto me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him..." John 6:44.

Mechanics of the process in the Sunday School or Children's Church setting.

EVERY WEEK in Children's Church the children have an opportunity to consider salvation. Ron finishes his message and then hands the next segment to Francine. This is the typical procedure:

  1. Pray..asking the Lord to give any boy or girl the courage they need to come and talk to Mr. Ron in a few moments to ask about what the Bible says about knowing for sure that Heaven is their home.
  2. In a small room [ say up to 40 or so kids] I use flash cards. In larger rooms I use PowerPoint.
  3. Flash card #1For all Have_Step One For all Have_Step One [ I use a picture that is culturally relevant] The scripture is pretty much always the same so that the kids learn the verses.
    • The Bible, God's Word says "All have sinned and come short of the glory of God." Romans 3:23
    • That means that everyone is a sinner. I am a sinner, our preacher is a sinner, grandma is a sinner, everyone is a sinner.
    • Heaven is a perfect place.
    • I am not perfect. Therefore, if I go to Heaven as an unforgiven sinner, then is Heaven perfect anymore? No , it is not.
    • Therefore, I cannot go to Heaven as an unforgiven sinner.
  4. Flash card #2 Wages_Step Two Wages_Step Two[ Again a picture is worth a thousand words. Here I use the picture of a gift wrapped].
    • The Bible, God's Word says "For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal Life through Jesus Christ our Lord." Romans 6:23
    • The Bible says that our paycheck, that is, what we earn for sin, is death. This is the eternal death, the opposite of everlasting life in Heaven.
    • Eternal death is forever in that place called Hell.
    • But you have a GIFT from God. He paid for your sins when He died on the cross, was buried, and came back to life on the third day.
    • Just like any gift, you will have to accept it to make it yours. He will not force you.
  5. Flash card #3 Repentance_Step Three Repentance_Step Three.
    • The Bible, God's Word says "...except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish." Luke 13:3
    • In order to accept the gift of eternal life, you must first see or understand that you need to accept it.
    • Jesus wants you to repent. To repent means to turn from your old ways. The ONLY way you can change is to let Jesus change you.
  6. Flash card #4Whosoever_Step Four Whosoever_Step Four.
    • The Bible, God's Word says "For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved" Romans 10:13
    • Saved...saved from what? Saved from spending forever away from Heaven and saved to spending forever with Jesus in Heaven.
  7. AT THIS POINT, I simply have them bow their heads and close eyes. I pray. Then with heads still bowed I say that if anyone wants to go sit with Mr. Ron and our helper[s] and talk to him about asking Jesus into your heart then now is the time to go do that. After we open our eyes, then I am going on with Bible Game Time.

Now you say, how in the world does that work for you? EXCELLENT. If they are serious about salvation, you couldn't stop them from talking to the preacher or teacher no matter how loud and noisy a game you have going on. They will go talk to him. If they are too young, or have not understood the invitation, then we simply send them back to game time.

Results? Yes. Pray. Present the Word. Let the Lord do the rest.
